Approximate listening instructions
To take full advantage of the experiment you need to wear a 'sensorial deprivation' kit, consisting of a night mask (you can make it yourself, the important thing is that it does not cover your ears - in case you are not able to obtain the 'total' darkness) and ear plugs, which serve exclusively in the initial part, a sort of individual/internal preparation/listening phase. In this phase there is total silence, the ear plugs serve precisely to amplify this feeling of isolation and to sharpen our auditory perception, sealing ourselves in listening to the sound of our body, made of breaths and beats; after a few minutes, with the appearance of the first extraneous sound objects, we can safely remove them (even before, if they make us uncomfortable) thus passing to the next phase: collective listening. Masks, closed eyes or total darkness are 'mandatory' for the total lenght.
Considering the nature of the experiment, it is obvious that it should be enjoyed in the company of others and not alone, therefore it must be spread via speakers: as best as possible!
To correctly adjust the listening volume, make sure to set the high-pitched sounds at the 25' perceptible.
Your feedback is really appreciated.
– How do we do it?
– We will stay here like this.
The rupture from which emerges the ever more pressing human difficulty to develop communication with other species, as well as to establish a relationship with the environment that is free of supremacy or exploitation, seems to arise from a sensorial limit of the human being and from a degeneration caused by the modalities of the capitalist system in which we find ourselves living today.
How to react? One of the possibilities is to trigger new desires and tensions, to re-discover the need to listen, to develop some skills inherent to communication and to imagine new environments for it. The multiple relationships between different species can still be perceived through instinct, or by working with new orientation techniques such as echolocation.
The ecological tension to reappropriate – sensitizing it as much as possible – our impoverished sensorial system requires experimentation. Sensorial isolation and deprivation can act as a practice through which it is possible to approach the abandonment and the dissolution of the self, in favour of a collective (listening) experience that is able to bring us closer to the “other”, to understand that which sustains us, surrounds us and is beside us, the rest of ourselves.
